The weekend began with our Senior Ladies defeating Skryne on Saturday evening with a scoreline of 5-10 to 0-06 (match report below) and this was followed by a piece of history on Sunday morning as our club fielded a third ladies team for the first time ever... and they did not disappoint! Our girls ran out 5-08 to 1-02 winners over Dunboyne in the Junior F Championship, whilst our Junior D girls ended the weekend with a 2-04 to 0-06 victory over Skryne last night.

Pictured are our history makers before their impressive display on Sunday morning!

On a bright breezy evening in Ashbourne, Skryne were the visitors for this must win second round championship match. Straight from the throw in the Donaghmore Ladies signalled their intent with a trademark surging run through the heart of the Skyrne defence by AoibhĂn Cleary, which resulted in the opening point. From the kick out Ciara Doherty won the ball and finished superbly to the net, all within the first minute.

It was the beginning of a very fruitful evening for Doherty, shortly afterwards she put Isabel O’Kane through and she calmly finished to the net. Doherty followed up with points from play, from frees and a 13th minutes goal. The Donaghmore Ladies were well organised at the back giving the visitors very few opportunities and limiting them to a single point in the first half. Máire O’Shaughnessy and Aoibhín Cleary were bringing the game to Skryne at every opportunity and in 20th minute, after a superb turnover from Ríona Daly, a sweeping move led to a goal by Katie Twomey. Shortly after Alex Meehan replaced the injured Kellyjean Courtney for Donaghmore. On 24 minutes O’Kane scored a fine individual point despite been under pressure. Just before the break Róisín Williams made a great save at the expense of a 45 to Skryne.

Skryne started the second half brightly and the cross bar denied them an early goal. Doherty scored a free before Skryne replied with 4 points in a row. Twomey and Cleary pointed to stem the tide and Doherty added three points (2 frees) to finish out the game.

Special mention to two of the youngest players on the pitch, RĂona Daly & Isabel O’Kane, who had superb games and certainly have bright futures in Donaghmore colours.
All in all a very satisfying evening for the Donaghmore Ladies who now know they are in a quarter final and a win away to Seneschalstown in two weeks will guarantee them a home game.
