Intermediate Hurling Championship - Group B1

9th August 2020 – 2pm Kiltale.

Referee : Sean Gahan

Donaghmore / Ashbourne 1-15

Kilskyre / Moylagh 0-18

The perfect playing surface of Kiltale’s new back pitch was the venue for the opening round of the Meath GAA Intermediate Hurling Championship Group B1 match between Donaghmore Ashbourne and the combined clubs of Kilskyre/Moylagh.

With a 2pm throw in the Moores were quick to register a score with a fine effort against the breeze from play from Colm Ó Méalóid with less that 2 minutes on the clock. Kilskyre / Moylagh responded with two points before David Carey split the posts point from play in the 5 minute mark. Another point from play from Carey and four from Kilskyre/Moylagh saw the north Meath men up 0-6 to 0 0-3 at the water break in what was a very stop start opening 15 minutes.

Kilskyre/Moylagh scored another point from play and were through for a sure goal in the 18th minutes were it not for a super point blank reaction save by keeper Thomas Brunell.

David Carey keep the score board ticking over, with help from his brother Conor and also Conor O Farrell to have the sides go in Kilskyre / Moylagh 0-11 to Donaghmore Ashbourne 0-08 at half time.

The Moores made a few tactical changes at halftime and with the wind at their backs they raised their intensity to bring them right back in the game matching Kilskyre/Moylagh with frees from David Carey, a point from play from Conor O’ Farrell and then just at the second water break a well taken goal from Conor Carey to leave the sides level 0-14 to 1-11.

Two more frees and a 65 from David Carey and a point from play from Darragh O Sullivan had the Ashbourne hurlers with one eye on the finish line up four points on the 26 minute mark. However, Kilskyre / Moylagh were never going to lay down easily and took two points from play and converted two more to draw the game 0-18 to 1-15.

All in all the Moores will feel that this was one that got away, maybe better shot selection in the last minutes and cooler heads may have been the difference, however hindsight is always 20-20.

All eyes now with Meath fixtures committee to see who they will play next after a drawn game.
