Wolfe Tones v Donaghmore/Ashbourne Premier 1 in Kilberry
HT Wolfe Tones 2-4 Don/Ash 1-12
FT Wolfe Tones 5-10 Don/Ash 3-16
They say goals win games but not on this occasion but there were plenty in this game played in Kilberry on a perfect night for football where it finished all level in a match Don/Ash will feel they played enough good football to win. Where Donaghmore/Ashbourne seemed to have the upper hand for most of this match Wolfe Tones never threw in the towel and got goals too easily at times. Wolfe Tones went 1-1 up before Don/Ash opened their account with a fine point from Ethan Tormey after 3 minutes of play and went on to score another 7 points from play from Luke Wilson (2 pts 1f), Kevin Fenton 2 each and Shaun Byrne, Rory McCann, Matt Crumlish 1 each before Wolfe Tones replied with a point from a free to leave is Don/Ash 0-8 Wolfe Tones 1-2 at the first water break. Again Wolfe Tones got in for a goal just after the break followed by a point from play to put Tones in front by 1. Rory McCann steadied the Don/Ash ship with a great goal on 22 minutes followed by 2 more points from Luke Wilson and a point from Danny Deery. Wolfe Tones finished the half with a converted point from a free.
The teams traded points at the start of 2nd half with Ethan Tormey getting his 2nd on the night from half back. Tones again struck the back of the net for the 3rd time on 6 minutes but Evan Quinn responded seconds later with a goal of his own but when Tones took a free from about 40 meters out which seemed to be going over the bar but ended in the back of the net it seemed that no matter how many scores the visitors would get it would be hard to come back from the amount of goals conceded. The visitors settled and scored some good points from Kevin Fenton and Luke Wilson who also scored a goal from the penalty spot. At the 2nd water break there were 5 points between the teams with Don/Ash ahead. But the home side were not finished with the goal fest and went on to score another goal with minutes left on the clock. Danny Deerey finished the scoring for the visitors but even with a score of 3-16 which you would think would be enough for a win in any match the goals scored by Tones always kept them in the match and finished with a score of 5-10.
Don/Ash while happy to get a draw, played well and thought they had won by 1 point but the referee deemed it a draw. Some really good football from a very young side all over the pitch and the experience they gained from this match will definitely stand to them going forward.
