A winning start to the 2021 Intermediate Camogie Championship.
It was a balmy Tuesday evening when Donaghmore Ashbourne Intermediate team took to the field in their first Championship match coached by Richie, Vinny and Maura. It was great to see our Junior team turn out to support their friends and join in the warm up. Many thanks also to the club Physio Richard for being part of the team.
We welcomed our visitors from Kiltale and true to form the match started punctually at 19:30.
It was a flying start for the ladies with two early goals from Lizzie and Maggie. A flurry of points added to the score in the first quarter before Kiltale rallied to score. A point from Rachael and a super goal from Shannan saw us to the first water break.
Kiltale scored some great points early in the second quarter and some magnificent saves and clearances under pressure from their goalie denied us some more scores. Sarah adding to our points tally with an accurate long range shot meant we were comfortable going into half time.
Kiltale are a great side and should never be underestimated and came out battling hard in the second half. They had plenty of possession but it was a testament to our backs Robyn, Emma and Sinead P who defended admirably and our half backs Annie, Eimear and Ali who cleared the line that scores didn’t materialise.
Sinead S who stepped up to the plate and deputised for our regular goalie Leah, who is currently recovering from an injury, sent many a ball towards our midfield team of Sammy and Ava who skillfully negotiated the determined Kiltale defence resulting in another goal from Sorcha to see out the match and the win.
Many thanks to all who turned out to show their support for the ladies. It was great to see supporters in the stand again.
