H/T Donaghmore/Ashbourne 3-4 Dunshaughlin 0-9
F/T Donaghmore/Ashbourne 3-9 Dunshaughlin 1-17
On a warm evening in Ashbourne our Premier 1 side went out to play their final match in this championship and made a cracking start with a goal within seconds of start from an in-form Kevin Cully. Dunshaughlin leveled with 2 points from play and 1 from a free before David Keenan put the home side back in front with a point from play. Ethan Tormey got the 2nd goal followed by a point from Colin Lynch to leave the score Don/Ash 2-2 to Dunshaughlin 0-3 at the first water break.
After the water break Dunshaughlin started the brightest with a point from play just after the restart but Don/Ashbourne responded with a point from Shane Rea who was a constant threat from wing back. A third goal came from Joe Magee who caught some great ball on the edge of the square and was finally rewarded with the perfect finish to the back of the net. Simon Wilson who was very well marked and would have been a watched man after his huge scoring in previous match but got himself on the scoreboard with a point from play 26 minutes in. Dunshaughlin replied scoring 6 points after water break with 4 from play and 2 frees. Good defending from our hard working Killian Hogan, Jack McCarney, Cian O'Rourke, Luke Barrett and Ethan Tormey kept any threat of goal coming from the visitors.
The second half started with a point from Kevin Cully followed by a Dunshaughlin fight back which saw them scoring 1-1 to get them right back into this match and could have been worse but for the fine saves by Sean Hogan in goals. Dunshaughlin were only 2 points behind at the final water break and went on to score 6 points in the final quarter most of which came from frees (5).
Danny Deery, Ethan Tormey and Faolan Smyth finished the scoring for the homeside. While Don/Ash didn't win this match, they gave a great display of football and should look forward to a better season when it all gets back to normal in the New Year.
On a different note an incident that occurred toward the end of the match saw an accidental collision between 2 players, it resulted in Conor Carey who came on as a sub about 10 minutes into 2nd half being taken away in an ambulance to hospital. Conor is being very well looked after in James Connolly Hospital and underwent surgery and is now in recovery. We wish Conor the very best from all at Donaghmore/Ashbourne GAA club and especially his team mates and management.
