Match report
Donaghmore/Ashbourne were unfortunate to come away without any points from their IHC Round 4 clash with Kilskyre/Moylagh in Kilberry on Sunday morning.
They got off to a quick start as Aidan O’Connor sent over the opening score of the game before an effort from Willie McGrath levelled it.
Two more from the north Meath side extended the gap before O’Connor finished to the net from close range after a 50/50 ball fell his way.
He added another point to have all of Don/Ash’s 1-2 scoreline at the water break.
A brace of frees by Darragh O’Sullivan were responded to with another couple of points from McGrath and another from the Kilskyre/Moylagh forward line.
Controversy arose when ref Gerry O’Brien awarded a goal to Kilskyre/Moylagh after a goal line scramble, despite neither umpire signalling for it. Don/Ash responded through David Carey and another O’Sullivan free to go into the half time break level at 1-6 apiece.
A tit-for-tat third quarter saw scores from O’Sullivan and Conor O’Farrell, but the amalgamated clubs stuck with Don/Ash throughout. An O’Sullivan dead-ball had the Moors one up at the second half water break, 1-10 to 1-09.
Another McGrath free drew the sides level again before Carey grabbed his second point. But Don/Ash were shaken by the concession of a second goal following another scramble. It was a huge blow and one they could not recover from, despite the best efforts of the forward line. O’Sullivan tapped over their last score as Kilskyre/Moylagh held out for the two-point win.
The result, coupled with Kildalkey’s win over Gaeil Colmcille, ends the lads hopes of a quarter final spot, but they will survive at Intermediate as a result of wins over Kells and Killyon. Their final game of 2021 will come against Kildalkey in two weeks time.
