Donaghmore/Ashbourne v Summerhill Feis Cup
Venue: Summerhill @ 11am
Half time Summerhill 1-5 Don/Ash 4-9
Full time Summerhill 1-7 Don/Ash 5-14
Donaghmore/Ashbourne won the toss and decided to play with the wind as it is always a difficult place to get a result so we needed to put up a decent score in the first half to carry us through. It was the best possible start with Thomas McGovern getting the opening point within a minute. Michael Deegan opened his tally of 1-8 on the day with a well worked goal. Andrew Tormey had the visitors up by 2-1 after just 3 minutes. Deegan put another one over the bar before Summerhill registered their first point from a free on 7 minutes. Deegan 2 frees and Dylan Brady brought the visitors to 2-5 before Summerhill got to grips with the wind conditions and got a goal and a quick point from a free to bring them to 1-2 on 15 minutes. There was no let up from Donaghmore/Ashbourne who tagged on another 2-4 with goals coming from Thomas McGovern and Shaun Byrne and an inform Deegan 4points (1F). Summerhill finished the half adding 3pts (2F). Our backs had to work very hard to keep Summerhill to the minimum while we had the wind advantage. Half time score Summerhill 1-5 (8)Don/Ash 4-9 (21)
For Donaghmore/Ashbourne it was to keep the scoreboard ticking over and stop Summerhill from putting up a big score which they did. With the competition allowing unlimited subs during the game, Summerhill brought out an almost new team for the 2nd half bar 2 players. Don/Ash kept up the pressure with Kevin Cully working hard in centre field and was rewarded with 2 points from play. Iarlaith O’Donnell came off with an injury but hopefully not too serious. Leo Reilly made his entrance count with a goal and a point within 2 minutes of being introduced. Daragh McGovern got his name on the scoreboard with a point before being substituted by Stephen Carton. Summerhill added 2pts in 2nd half.
A couple of our minors from last year were introduced who had made their debut at Adult football on Saturday night in Premier 1 Sean Tyrell and Thomas Cooney. Both players looked to slot in very well.
This was a good start to the year with young lads like Matt Crumlish, Evan Quinn and Ethan Tormey slotting in with Melia, Carton and O’Donnell in the backs. Jack Hannigan didn’t have too many saves to make but his kick outs found his teammates most of the time. Sean Curran captained the side to their first win in 2022.
