F/T Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-12 St Colmcilles 0-7
On a bitterly cold and windy night in Ashbourne saw Don/Ash record their 2nd victory in this competition. St Colmcilles always bring great support and this was evident by the crowd in the stand. David Gough back from busy Intercounty League duties the previous weekend got proceeding going at exactly 8pm. Michael Deegan opened the scoring when he pointed from a free after 2 minutes. Cilles responded and went ahead by 2pts to 1 after 9 minutes. It took both teams time to settle and deal with the cross winds which were blowing a gale and made it difficult to score but it was the home side who playing against the wind in the first half led by 8pts to 3pts with points coming from Thomas McGovern, Jack Hannigan a free from 40 yards, Dylan Brady, Kevin Cully and the inform Deegan scoring 4pts 2 frees. Ethan Tormey could have added a goal when coming in at the end of a well worked ball on 15 minutes but was unlucky to see it rebound off the goalpost and was cleared from danger. The point of the night came from Graham (Biggy) Reilly on 16 minutes when he launched from at least 40 yards out.
Don/Ash made a couple of changes at half time with Andy Colgan taking over from Jack Hannigan in goals and Leo Reilly on for the hard working Shaun Byrne. Cilles started the brightest with 2 points 1 free. Michael Deegan added to his tally of 6 points on the night with 2 more from play. Andy Colgan converted a free straight over the black spot 13 minutes into 2nd half. Both teams were guilty of wides with Cilles winning the contest with at least 10 which could have made a big difference to the outcome on the night had they been on target. Stephen Carton was introduced on 25 minutes and didn’t hang around, he was on the scoreboard 20 seconds after been brought on. That closed out the scoring for the home side with Cilles making it 7pts 2 minutes before the final whistle was blown. Cillian Hogan came on for Thomas McGovern.
