Donaghmore/Ashbourne v Simonstown Gaels @ 7.15pm in Ashbourne

H/T Don/Ash 1-8 Simonstown Gaels 1-6

F/T Don/Ash 1-12 Simonstown Gaels 2-12

The start of the Tuesday night league games saw Simonstown coming to Ashbourne and getting a win. While our 2nd Team were away in Dunsany in A league 2B it left things tight for players with lads away and some injuries to contend with. Simonstown got the perfect start with a goal within the first couple of minutes but in fairness to our lads they did everything right and with quick ball in to Stephen Carton and taking his mark very well he converted for the home side to get on the board. Matt Crumlish and Luke Barrett combined to get the ball up the field in lightning speed and pass to Stephen Carton to put the ball in the back of the net, followed by another 2 marks and a point from play to the inform Carton. Simonstown had replied with a point on 5 minutes to lead 1.1 to 1pt before the home sides purple patch which saw Kevin Fenton tagging one on. Simonstown got another from play before converting a pointed free. Leo Reilly got 2 points from play where Don/Ash were very patient in their build up after been guilty of wasting a few that went wide. Luke Barrett, James Redmond and Conor Carton had their hands full trying to contain the very tall experienced full forward line of Simmonstown but did extremely well to keep the gap to 2points at half time 1-8 to 1-6 up.  Sean Curran was excellent at centre back and things didn’t look so bad at the break. Killian Hogan and David Carr held their own in mid field with Carr working extremely hard in a defensive midfield role.

The 2nd half started with both sides guilty of at least 2 wides a piece before Simmonstown put over a point from play. Stephen Carton put over another 2 from frees and Daragh McGovern put the home side 1-11 to 1-7 up with 40 minutes on the clock on our new scoreboard supplied by Tadg Riordan Motors. Simonstown hit 1 from play and another from a free, while Ethan Tormey replied with a point from play. That was to be the last score that Donaghmore/Ashbourne were to get with 13 minutes left. Shaun Byrne put in his usual hard shift as third midfielder. James Crumlish saw his shot on goal saved which was to be the difference between the teams at the end. At the other end of the field it was Alex Ward who pulled off several brilliant saves and Luke Barrett once again just always seems to get a hand in at the right time. Daragh O’Sullivan was introduced for Kevin Fenton. The last 12 minutes saw Simonstown score 1-3 without reply to finish the game 3pts up. Don/Ash did push to get a draw in the last few minutes but the visitors held on to get the win.
