A League Division 1A Round 11
Summerhill v Donaghmore/Ashbourne at 8pm in Summerhill
Referee David Coldrick
Summerhill needed to win this match to get to the A league Final so it was all to play for and Donaghmore/Ashbourne wanted to finish on a good note going into the next chapter which is Championship coming up in August. Summerhill started off the best on home ground with the first 3 points, 2 frees from the boot of Barry Dardis. Don/Ash got on the board with a point from play from Bryan Menton after 9 minutes and went on to score his 2nd point after a lovely move involving Cillian Hegarty, Jamie Browne, Kevin Cully and Andrew Tormey. Another point from Summerhill which came from a 45 when Eoin Ryan got to a ball which had dropped short, Summerhill converted to make it 4pts to 3pts. Kevin Fenton scored the next point from play on 14minutes. Shane Melia intercepted a wayward pass on the 21 and the ball travelled up the field through the hands of Cillian Hegarty, Evan Quinn and Andrew Tormey who passes to Bryan Menton who scores Don/Ash first goal on 19 minutes. Summerhill responded with a point from a free but Don/Ash were on fire in this period with Darragh O’Sullivan putting over 2 from play and Sean Curran putting another ball past Tony McDonnell in the Summerhill net. Eamon McDonnell did score a point from play on 24 minutes. It finished 2-5 to 6pts at halftime.
Jamie Browne was first on the scoreboard after just 2 minutes but Summerhill hadn’t gone away and scored a goal with only 4 minutes into 2nd half. It was 2-6 to 1-6 with 34 minutes gone. Andrew Tormey was next up to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Yellow cards were shown to Kevin Ryan and Sean Curran after a tussle but overall this was a very clean competitive match with plenty of passion and skill shown throughout. Darrragh O’Sullivan got another from play on 42 minutes to make it 2-8 to 1-7 but Summerhill were pushing and got a point from a free and a goal on 46 minutes. It was game on with only 1 point between the teams but that was to be Summerhill’s last score of the game. James Crumlish on for Darragh McGovern, Michael O’Sullivan was brought on for his brother Darragh, Ethan Tormey on for Cillian Hegarty and Shaun Byrne on for Kevin Fenton. Andrew Tormey put over a point from play on 52 minutes and Shaun Byrne on 58 minutes. Summerhill were pushing hard and put Adam Flanagan in on end of square but to no avail as Don/Ash came out as winners to end Summerhill’s hope of getting to League Final. It was a good performance by Don/Ash against a tough Summerhill team but hopefully it will stand to them going forward and into Championship.
