Fairyhouse Steel Senior Championship Group A Donaghmore/Ashbourne v Dunshaughlin.
H/T Don/Ash 1-5 Dunshaughlin 0-9
F/T Don/Ash 1-10 Dunshaughlin 0-14
Donaghmore Ashbourne got off to the perfect start with a point coming from Leo Reilly after the perfect ball in from Darragh O’Sullivan. A minute later from a free kick passed to Dylan Brady who kicked a long ball in towards Tormey but Adam Mc Dermott seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball and it went straight into the back of the net. This was followed up with a patient build up before Kevin Cully kicked a superb point from distance. Conor Duke opened the Dunshaughlin scoring with a point from play to leave it 1-2 to 1 point. Andy Colgan came up to take a long range free which he put over to make it 1-3 for Don/Ash. Don/Ash were guilty of giving away too many frees in key positions which Matthew Costello was not going to miss. This brought them back into the match and gradually they levelled the game by doing just that. Costello and Murphy did get 2 points from play in that period of play. Andy Colgan who scored 3 points from frees on the night converted his 2nd on 14 minutes. Leo Reilly popped up on 30 minutes to put over his 2nd and Don/Ash back 1 point in front. Conor Gray went on a run towards the Don/Ash goal and fired from close in but thankfully Andy Colgan pulled off a brilliant save but Ruairi Kinsella was on hand to put it over the bar. The sides were level once more. Mathew Costello converted a free to go into the break with a scoreline of Dunshaughlin 0-9 Don/Ash 1-5.
With a good build up after winning the ball from the restart and Don/Ash pressing playing with the wind a long range point went narrowly wide and from the kick out Conor Gray while winning the ball came into contact with a Don/Ash player and got a black card 2 minutes into the 2nd half. Unfortunately Don/Ash only scored 2 points from play in that 10 minute period with James Redmond and Thomas McGovern firing over from play. James Crumlish was brought on for Michael Deegan. Dunshaughlin got another 2 points from frees and the match was again a 1 point game with Dunshaughlin edging ahead with 40 minutes gone. Gray was reintroduced having served his 10 minutes on the line. Conor Carton on (after a long time injury) for James Redmond. James Crumlish levelled the match one again splitting the posts on 45 minutes. Shaun Byrne was introduced on the 48th minute for Darragh O’Sullivan. Ruairi Kinsella converts from another free kick after Conor Gray was fouled. Andy Colgan was next up from a 45 and put his 3rd over from placed balls on the night. Adam Mc Dermott (Goalkeeper) went on a run up the pitch and seemed to be surprised that the field opened up for him and was in front of the Don/Ash goals before he was closed down by the Don/Ash backs and passed the ball to McDonagh who put over to go back in front by 1. Kevin Fenton was brought on for Dylan Brady. From the kick out Don/Ash pressed forward and when Kevin Cully scored a point from play with time almost up it looked like it was going to end up a drawn game. Dunshaughlin pressed again in time added on and resulted in a 45 being scored by Adam McDermott. Donaghmore Ashbourne did have time to respond but unfortunately the attempt went wide. With the concession of too many scorable free kicks it made it a more disappointing defeat. It will be an evening that Don/Ash will want to put to the back of their minds and concentrate on their next championship match where they need to get a result in this round robin part of the championship. Next up will be Curraha on Saturday August 12th in Ratoath at 6.30pm.
